The Emergency Care Society of South Africa (“the Society”) has recently learnt of yet another attack on three members of the emergency care profession working in Johannesburg. A disturbing trend of attacks on EMS personnel engaged in the delivery of emergency care to sick and injured patients appears to be on the rise.
The Society strongly condemns violence towards others, but especially so towards emergency care professionals who might be vulnerable to attack when serving the needs of their communities. Our thoughts and empathy are extended to our colleagues involved in the most recent criminal events in Johannesburg, where they were held up in their ambulance at gun point.
We would like to reach out to all members of the community to support their local EMS agencies and to help ensure that emergency care workers are kept safe in the course of their duties towards the public.
